INTRODUCTION

Montgomery High School's native plants garden is unique. It started in August of 1995 as an empty field littered with trash. In January of 1996 Montgomery High School students started to plant, and the the Imperial Beach Job Corps landscaping class began to install a drip irrigation system. Now many plants which grow wild in San Diego County have been arranged in distinct natural communities.

A walk through our garden is a Botanical stroll through San Diego County. The 150+ species planted here have been chosen to highlight the biodiversity of our region.

As our plants grow they will attract animals and provide shade for other plants which will be added as funds become available. Students will be trained to conduct tours of the garden, and it will become an important resource for environmental education.

The garden is located adjacent to the north fence of Montgomery High School's west parking lot. There is no mistaking the west parking lot. As part of the beautification of Palm Avenue our students worked with a local artist to design two twenty foot tall serpents which guard the entrance to this parking lot and a colorful geometric design on the pavement under the traffic signal.
